2026 Updates: Autism and the
NDIS

Early Childhood Approach: Autistic children under 9
are now supported through the NDIS Early Childhood Approach, which
connects families with early intervention services before a full NDIS
plan is in place. If your child is newly diagnosed, contact your GP or
paediatrician for a referral.

Diagnostic Language: The NDIS accepts autism
diagnoses using both DSM-5 (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and ICD-11
terminology. Diagnosis from a paediatrician, psychiatrist, or a
multidisciplinary team is accepted.

Independent Assessments (2026 status): The NDIA
continues to refine its assessment tools. Check ndis.gov.au for the
current planning approach in NSW.

NDIS Pricing (2025–26): Updated pricing for
autism-related supports, particularly for Specialist Support
Coordination and Behaviour Support, applies from July 2025. Review your
plan budget with your Support Coordinator.

How SADC Supports
Autistic Participants

Support Workers Matched
to Your Needs

We don’t do generic rostering. When matching a support worker to an
autistic participant, we consider: – Communication style (verbal, AAC,
PECS, visual supports) – Sensory sensitivities and triggers – Special
interests (we train workers to engage with these genuinely) – Routines
and transition needs – Behaviour support plan requirements

Community Participation

Our community participation program supports autistic participants
to: – Join local clubs, sports teams, and hobby groups – Attend
mainstream community events with support – Build friendships and social
confidence – Develop independence in public spaces

School Holiday Programs

Our holiday programs are autism-friendly by design — not adapted
after the fact. Sensory considerations, predictable schedules, social
stories, and quiet spaces are built in. See our [School Holiday Programs
page] for 2026 dates.

Supported Independent Living

For autistic adults ready to live more independently, SADC offers SIL
in Western Sydney. We develop individual support plans that respect
routines, sensory needs, and communication preferences.

Questions
Families Ask Us About NDIS Autism Support

Q: My child was just diagnosed with autism. How do we access
the NDIS?
A: Contact the NDIS directly at 1800 800 110 or visit
ndis.gov.au. For children under 9, the Early Childhood Approach is your
starting point. You’ll need a diagnosis from a registered professional
(paediatrician, psychiatrist, or multidisciplinary team).

Q: How much NDIS funding will my autistic child
receive?
A: Funding is based on individual assessed support
needs, not diagnosis alone. A functional assessment by an occupational
therapist or speech therapist significantly helps the NDIA understand
your child’s needs and allocate appropriate funding.

Q: My NDIS plan is coming up for review. What should I ask
for?
A: Bring evidence of progress and ongoing needs from your
allied health team. If your child’s needs have changed (new school,
transition to adulthood, increased support needs), document this
clearly. SADC’s Support Coordinators can help you prepare for your
review.

Q: Does NDIS fund ABA therapy for autism? A: The
NDIS funds evidence-based therapies under Improved Daily Living. ABA
approaches vary significantly — the NDIA generally funds therapies
aligned with its evidence framework and that respect the rights and
dignity of participants. Speak with your Support Coordinator about
what’s appropriate for your family.
