General NDIS Questions
What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government program that provides funding and support to people with permanent and significant disabilities. It helps participants access the services and supports they need to live independently, participate in their community, and achieve their goals. The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and covers over 500,000 Australians.
Am I eligible for the NDIS?
To be eligible for the NDIS, you must: be under 65 years of age when you first apply, be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa, and have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to participate in everyday activities. The disability must be likely to be lifelong and require support from the NDIS. If you are unsure about your eligibility, SADC can help you understand the requirements and assist with your application.
How do I apply for NDIS funding?
To apply for NDIS funding, you need to complete an Access Request Form and submit it to the NDIA along with supporting evidence from your healthcare providers. The evidence should document your disability and how it impacts your daily life. You can submit your application online through the NDIS portal, by phone, or in person at an NDIS office. SADC offers support coordination services to help guide you through the application process.
How long does the NDIS application process take?
The NDIS application process typically takes 21 days for an access decision once all required documentation is submitted. However, if additional information is needed, this can extend the timeframe. After access is granted, your first planning meeting is usually scheduled within 8 weeks. The entire process from initial application to receiving your first plan can take 2-4 months depending on your circumstances.
What funding categories does the NDIS cover?
NDIS funding is divided into three main support categories: Core Supports (daily activities, transport, consumables, social and community participation), Capacity Building Supports (improving your skills and independence, including support coordination, therapy, and employment support), and Capital Supports (assistive technology, equipment, and home or vehicle modifications). Your plan will specify funding amounts for each relevant category based on your individual needs and goals.
Choosing an NDIS Provider
How do I choose an NDIS provider?
When choosing an NDIS provider, consider their experience with your specific disability type, their service quality and reputation, location and availability, the range of services offered, their communication style, and whether they are a registered NDIS provider. Look for providers with positive reviews, qualified staff, and a person-centred approach. SADC recommends meeting with potential providers before making a decision to ensure they understand your needs and goals.
Can I change my NDIS provider?
Yes, you have complete choice and control over your NDIS providers. You can change providers at any time without needing approval from the NDIA. Simply notify your current provider of your intention to end services (check your service agreement for notice periods), then engage your new provider. Your funding stays with you, not the provider. SADC makes transitions smooth with clear service agreements and flexible arrangements.
What is the difference between registered and unregistered providers?
Registered NDIS providers have been audited and approved by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, ensuring they meet quality and safety standards. If your plan is Agency-managed, you can only use registered providers. Unregistered providers have not been through this process but may still offer quality services. If your plan is Self-managed or Plan-managed, you can use both registered and unregistered providers. Registered providers like SADC offer additional protections and accountability.
Is SADC a registered NDIS provider?
Yes, SADC Disability Services is a registered NDIS provider with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. This means we have been independently audited and verified to meet all NDIS quality and safety requirements. Our registration covers a comprehensive range of supports including daily personal activities, community participation, support coordination, and group programs. You can verify our registration on the official NDIS provider register.

Our Services
What is support coordination?
Support coordination is an NDIS-funded service that helps you understand, implement, and get the most from your NDIS plan. A support coordinator works with you to connect you with the right providers, build your capacity to coordinate your own supports, resolve problems, and help you navigate the NDIS system. There are three levels: Support Connection (basic help finding services), Coordination of Supports (ongoing coordination), and Specialist Support Coordination (for complex needs).
What is the difference between support coordination and plan management?
Support coordination and plan management are different NDIS services. Support coordination helps you find and connect with providers, understand your plan, and build your skills to manage supports independently. Plan management handles the financial side – paying provider invoices, tracking your budget, and providing financial reports. You can have both services, just one, or neither depending on your needs and preferences. SADC offers support coordination services to help you navigate your NDIS journey.
What is respite care under NDIS?
Respite care under the NDIS provides short-term, temporary care for people with disabilities, giving regular carers (often family members) a break. This can be in-home respite where a support worker comes to your home, centre-based respite at a facility, or community-based respite involving outings and activities. NDIS funding for respite typically falls under Core Supports. SADC provides flexible respite care options tailored to individual and family needs.
What is community participation?
Community participation (also called community access) helps NDIS participants engage with their local community, develop social connections, and pursue interests outside the home. This includes attending social groups, recreational activities, sporting events, shopping, accessing community facilities, and building life skills. Support workers assist with transport, communication, and participation as needed. SADC offers comprehensive community access programs designed to increase independence and social inclusion.
What is SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation)?
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is NDIS funding for housing that has been specially designed or modified for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. SDA is different from the supports you receive – it is specifically for the physical building. Only a small percentage of NDIS participants (around 6%) are eligible for SDA funding. If you think you may need SDA, speak with your support coordinator or the NDIA about eligibility and options.
